Tony Campolo - Christian or Universalist?

Posted by Melody on 31st January 2007

Tony Campolo interviewed in the Edmonton Journal:

Q. Do you believe non-Christians can go to heaven?

A. That’s a good question to ask because the way we stand is we contend that trusting in Jesus is the way to heaven. However, we do not know who Jesus will bring into the kingdom and who He will not. We are very very careful about pronouncing judgment on anybody. We leave judgment in the hands of God and we are saying Jesus is the way. We preach Jesus, but we have no way of knowing to whom the grace of God is extended.

Rick Warren - Why Obama and not Hillary?

Posted by Melody on 25th January 2007

I find it curious that Rick Warren has heartily endorsed the presidency of Barak Obama ahead of Hillary Clinton. What does Barak have that Hillary lacks? Can anyone enlighten me? After the State Of The Union Adress on Tuesday evening, Hillary greatly outshone Barak when they were each given an extensive interview by ABC’s Charles Gibson (and Charles tries really hard to be fair). Hillary is far more articulate on real issues like the war in Iraq and has far more life experience. Why isn’t Rick supporting her?

LeRon Schultz: Emerging Wordsmith

Posted by Melody on 23rd January 2007

Author and former professor at Bethel Theological Seminary,LeRon Schultz (who I admit I know little about) makes this wierd comment about propositional truth,

“From a theological perspective, this fixation with propositions can easily lead to the attempt to use the finite tool of language on an absolute Presence that transcends and embraces all finite reality. Languages are culturally constructed symbol systems that enable humans to communicate by designating one finite reality in distinction from another. The truly infinite God of Christian faith is beyond all our linguistic grasping, as all the great theologians from Irenaeus to Calvin have insisted, and so the struggle to capture God in our finite propositional structures is nothing short of linguistic idolatry.”

It seems to me that language (groups of WORDs) is a gift from God, unique to mankind and the exact tool He chose in written form to communicate His story from the beginning of time. While I agree that God is “beyond all our linguistic grasping” our understanding of Him (not our instinctive knowledge) comes precisely from His written Word. I’m reminded of I John 1:1, “In the beginning was the WORD and the WORD was with God and the WORD was God. Why is God called WORD?

Weather Channel: The New Nazis?

Posted by Melody on 21st January 2007

Dr. Heidi Cullen of the Weather Channel (B.A. Eastern Religions) has raised the bar on any scientist who would DARE to question or be skeptical of man-made global warming. She “…is advocating that broadcast meteorologists be stripped of their scientific certification if they express skepticism about predictions of manmade catastrophic global warming. This latest call to silence skeptics follows a year (2006) in which skeptics were compared to “Holocaust Deniers” and Nuremberg-style war crimes trials were advocated by several climate alarmists.” This interesting article on the website of the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Words outlines the Nazi-like tactics of this whole crowd. Pretty frightening when one considers the political power they have. This stuff is all over the net this weekend (FINALLY!). Will liberal Chrsitians finally wake-up and see the handwriting on the wall?

NAE: National Association of Environmentalists

Posted by Melody on 18th January 2007

The National Association of Evangelicals today sold it’s name to the global warming environmentalists. The deal was brokered by a Richard Cizik, vice-president of governmental affairs for the NAE who states, “… I had a conversion experience on the climate issue not unlike my conversion to Christ.” What an incredible equation to make! And then he claims that he doesn’t worship the earth, he just wants us all to drive a Prius. These are the people who brought us the “What Would Jesus Drive?” campaign.

In a recent interview that you can read here he was asked, “So you are confident that your community will come to see the common goals it shares with environmentalists?” and his response was, “So long as we explain it the right way…much of the challenge is reframing the environmental issue for the evangelical community as a people issue.”

In other words, as soon as he can figure out the right marketing strategy to get into the evangelical mind-set, he can couch the argument in terms that we will all accept. WOW! Didn’t something like that happen in the garden of…? Oh, never mind.

Posted by Melody on 17th January 2007

Dated: January 16, 2007

Today, as the nation celebrates Religious Freedom Day, Exodus International, the world’s largest ministry to those desiring freedom from unwanted homosexuality, joins pro-family groups around the nation in urging Congress to stop a hate crimes bill that would penalize those with faith-based beliefs about homosexuality.

Evangelical Climate Initiative - Round 2?

Posted by Melody on 16th January 2007

It has been nearly a year since I first became aware of The Evangelical Climate Initiative through their radio ads which ran only for one weekend in my market. They have been strangely silent since then until today. An article popped up in Yahoo headlines today (By RODRIQUE NGOWI, Associated Press Writer) warning the world that they are meeting with the GOVERNMENT and they will tell us about it on Wednesday. The people behind this initiative (which I believe is a clever ploy to deceive the true church and deflect her from her true purpose which is to spread the gospel) know that the evangelical voice is a strong one in the USA. If they can get Christian people to back this, they will be able to destroy freedom and democracy as we know it - in the name of Jesus. “”Whether God created the Earth in a millisecond or whether it evolved over billions of years, the issue we agree on is that it needs to be cared for today,” said Rich Cizik, vice president of government relations for the National Association of Evangelicals, which represents 45,000 churches.”

So why is it taking so long to suck the evangelicals in? I believe it is because most evangelicals are familiar enough with the Word of God to know that God never commanded us to save the earth, but only to subdue it. We also know that this present earth will be destroyed by God and replaced with a ‘new earth’ as the Bible says. The ONE verse used in this initiative to substantiate their cause is Collosians 1:16 “For by Him all things were created; things in heaven and on earth”. One must stretch the meaning of this verse to the breaking point to apply it to this purpose. Here is the verse in it’s entirety “For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities - all things have been created by Him and for Him.” Verse 17 which immediately follows says this, “And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together“. The Christian leaders who have signed this thing should be ashamed to have taken scripture so grossly out of context.

Souls For Sale (You’ve Got To Be Kidding!)

Posted by Melody on 12th January 2007

This from the website of First Assembly of God Church, West Monroe, LA:

Do you like money? Do you love souls? February 18th you’re going to have a chance to prove it. In February 2007 we are taking First Assembly and soul winning to the next level. Whoever can bring the most unchurched people to the AM service will win a total of $1,800.00 cash. Here at First Assembly we are crazy for souls… But here are the rules:

Every visitor must be a person who doesn’t currently attend church anywhere to qualify
If you win you must take all of your visitors out to lunch that Sunday morning (no fast-food restaurants).
The visitor must be 13 years of age or older.

Now, GO get those souls and lets take soul winning to the next level!

Does this fall into the category of DUMB or DUMBER? If this was in the category of the youth department one might be able to understand the mentality, but seriously!

Los Angeles Catholic Archdiocese Uses the Christian Fish Symbol for Homosexual Solidarity

Posted by Melody on 10th January 2007

BUDAPEST, Hungary, Jan. 8 /Christian Newswire/ — The Christian fish symbol is an ancient and sacred symbol for the persecuted Christians in the 1st century, as well as contemporary believers in Christ. But that symbol which showed that Christians identified with each other in their obedience to follow Christ is taking on a whole new meaning. The Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, as one of their ministries, ‘Ministry with Lesbians and Gay Catholics’ decided to make the sacred fish symbol into a rainbow fish symbol pin.

As most people know, the homosexual community has long used the rainbow as a symbol of their solidarity with the movement to legitimize homosexuality in their communities. From the Diocese’ own website, it states “See in the fish pin a sign of recognition of our lesbian and gay sisters and brothers. The pin signals solidarity with all people of faith who promote justice and inclusivity for every person in their faith communities.” http://www.archdiocese.la/ministry/mlgc/index.php

Global Warming Threatens Summer Vacation

Posted by Melody on 10th January 2007

If you can’t get people worked up over global warming any other way, threaten their vacation! The EU released a report today in an attempt to rile up the natives about global warming. Since none of their other tactics have worked they seem to have hired a marketing consultant to help them advertise this global warming thing more effectively.

FIRST THE GOOD NEWS!
The report predicts there will be some European “winners” from climate change, at least initially (no report of what happens when “initially” passes). In the north of the continent, agricultural yields will increase with a lengthened growing season and a longer frost-free period. Tourism may become more popular on the beaches of the North Sea and the Baltic as the Mediterranean becomes too hot, and deaths and diseases related to winter cold will fall.

NOW THE BAD NEWS!
But the negative effects will far outweigh the advantages. Read the rest of this entry »
