Mulan is Cast

Posted by Melody on 28th March 2007

I finally did it! I have finished casting the Disney musical, Mulan, Jr. Thirteen 7th and 8th grade girls tried out for the lead and only one could be Mulan. But after two days of agonizing and several call backs, I have made decisions and parts are now “written in stone”. Tomorrow hearts will be broken; tears will be shed; but the deed is done. Let the rehearsals begin!

What’s Happened to my School?
Posted by Melody on April 14th, 2006

I haven’t paid a whole lot of attention to APU goings on for the last few years as I’ve had so many irons in my fire. Besides, with my college classmate Jon Wallace at the helm, I felt we were on solid theological ground. However, there have been several things that have brought my focus sharply back to APU in the last 8 weeks. As I was driving home from a trip to southern CA, I heard an ad on the radio that talked of a new environmentalist organization called the Evangelical Climate Initiative .Hmm… I thought. What a very strange combination. Read the rest of this entry »

The Latest on Sex at Harvard

Posted by Melody on 24th March 2007

Thu Mar 22, 2:39 PM ET

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Sometime between the founding of a student-run porn magazine and the day the campus health center advertised “Free Lube,” Harvard University seniors Sarah Kinsella and Justin Murray decided to fight back against what they see as too much mindless sex at the Ivy League school.

They founded a student group called True Love Revolution to promote abstinence on campus. The group, created earlier this school year, has more than 90 members on its Facebook.com page and drew about half that many to an ice cream social. Read the rest of this entry »

Al Gore vs Ted Haggard

Posted by Melody on 21st March 2007

Al Gore and Ted Haggard seem to be incompetition in the hypocrite department. Debra Saunders of the San Francisco Chronicle writes:

“Talk about inconvenient truths…Vice President Al Gore used $30,000 worth of energy in his surban Nashville home last year. That’s 221,000 killowatt-hours, twenty times the national average. He also owns multiple SUVs and flies around on private jets, just like his friends in the global-warming movement, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Laurie David, producer of An Inconvenient Truth. No hypocrisy here, say these committed environmentalists. They’ve bought “carbon offsets”, such as paying for trees to be planted in Africa to magically erase the pollution they generate here in the U.S. What a joke. Like adulterous preachers lecturing their flock against sin, Gore and his Hollywood sycophants find it far easier to scold the rest of us for our piggish energy consumption than to put a crimp in their own lavish lifestyles. So spare the sanctimony, Mr. Gore: He who lives in a massive, electricity-devouring house should not be throwing stones.”

Happy St. Patrick’s Day

Posted by Melody on 17th March 2007

When you sport red hair and freckles as I do, it’s impossible to be thought of as anything other than Irish. Only 12 percent of Irish (include British Isles here) have red hair and only 4 percent of Americans. While there have been some wonderful Irish people down through the centuries, the main thing the Irish are known for is drinking and fighting. And it’s as true today as ever. That’s why I’m so glad my Irish forbears got out of there and came to America.

So Happy St. Patrick’s Day from an American.

Spurgeon Quote of the Day

Posted by Melody on 16th March 2007

“I knew a man once who would not read some parts of the Word of God because they made him feel uneasy; but be you sure of this, that when you and the Word of God fall out, the Word of God has right on its side. There is something rotten in the state of Denmark when you cannot read a chapter without feeling that you wish it was not there. There is something wrong with you whenever you quarrel with the Word of God.”

Good News From Baghdad

Posted by Melody on 14th March 2007

Since good news from Iraq so seldom occurs in major media I thought I’d pass along this positive story from the Associated Press. The story is by Robert H. Reid. if you want to read the whole thing.

BAGHDAD - “Bomb deaths have gone down 30 percent in Baghdad since the U.S.-led security crackdown began a month ago. Execution-style slayings are down by nearly half. The once frequent sound of weapons has been reduced to episodic, and downtown shoppers have returned to outdoor markets — favored targets of car bombers
There are signs of progress in the campaign to restore order in Iraq, starting with its capital city….U.S. military officials, burned before by overly optimistic forecasts, have been cautious about declaring the operation a success. Another reason it seems premature: only two of the five U.S. brigades earmarked for the mission are in the streets, and the full compliment of American reinforcements is not due until late May.”

Jesus’ Tomb Just Another Titanic Sinking Ship

Posted by Melody on 9th March 2007

James Cameron of Titanic fame, in his claim to have access to the tomb of Jesus, is proving that he has no knowledge of the Bible. In Acts chapter 13, the Apostle Paul was preaching in the Jewish synagogue at Pisidian Antioch (at the invitation of the officials there) and it really was an exhortation to them, v.16, “Men of Isreal, and you who fear God, listen:…v.33 God has fulfilled his promise to our children in that He raised up Jesus…and as for the fact that he raised him up from the dead, NO MORE TO RETURN TO DECAY …V.35 Thou wilt not allow They Holy One to Undergo Decay.

Obviously the people behind this hoax do not fear God.

Why I Call Myself A “Christian” and NOT a “Christ Follower”

Posted by Melody on 9th March 2007

“…the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.” Acts 11:26. Nowhere in the Bible are believers called ‘Christ Followers’. People followed Jesus by the thousands during his earthly ministry. Why not? He gave them free food. But where the rubber (chariot wheel) met the road the vast majority of them were yelling, “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!” So I think I’ll just stick to being called a “Christian” even though it’s terribly old-fashioned.

Homosexual Help For Students Struggling

Posted by Melody on 3rd March 2007

In light of the problems with homosexuality that several Azusa Pacific students have had to deal with over the last year, and the conflicting messages the school administration has given them, I thought this article could be very helpful. Venus Magazine (aimed at lesbian black women) has the sweetest, most authentic article on gaining victory over homosexuality I have seen. Titled: Redeemed! 10 Ways to Get Out of the Gay Life, If You Want Out by Charlene E. Cothran, Venus Magazine Publisher

Here are a few exerpts:
